Gloves for Anti-Climb Fence and Security Patrol Work: What Buyers Should Specify

A practical sourcing guide for security patrol and anti-climb fence gloves, covering grip, abrasion, cuff length, touchscreen inserts, MOQ, lead times and where a knit-dip factory is the wrong source.

Start from the task, not the uniform

A security guard glove for nightly patrol is usually being asked to do three different jobs at once: open gates, handle keys or radios, and grab rough metal on anti-climb fence lines without tearing at the fingertips. Those jobs point to different constructions. A 13-gauge polyester or nylon shell with a sandy nitrile palm can work for general patrol and site checks, while a synthetic leather palm with reinforced index finger and thumb crotch is better if the glove spends time on steel mesh, padlocks and vehicle doors. If the buyer’s brief says security gloves with no use case, the factory is forced to guess on grip, cuff, and durability. That is how you end up with a glove that looks professional in the carton but fails at the fence line after two shifts. For this category, we usually ask whether the site is static guarding, mobile patrol, event security, or perimeter response. Static gatehouse work often needs lighter dexterity and touchscreen compatibility on the thumb and index finger. Mobile patrol around warehouses or logistics yards usually needs more abrasion resistance, a longer cuff, and better resistance to dust and damp steel. If the glove must also be worn in cool weather, a brushed acrylic liner or a 10-gauge insulated knit may be more suitable than a thin polyester shell. There is no single best construction, and a responsible supplier should say that plainly before quoting.

Pick the palm by the surface it will actually touch

Anti-climb fence systems are rough on palms and fingertips. Galvanised steel mesh, welded mesh, and anti-cut fence tops do not behave like rope or cardboard; they abrade palms fast and they punish weak thumb seams. For light patrol, a sandy nitrile palm on a 13-gauge liner gives good dry grip and enough cost control for large programmes. Sandy nitrile usually outperforms smooth PU here because the raised surface keeps contact on painted metal and powder-coated fence rails. If the buyer wants better oil resistance for vehicle checks or maintenance gates, a full nitrile foam or double-dipped nitrile palm is the more realistic option. If the site uses wet outdoor gates, the palm choice changes again. Latex crinkle can grip wet metal better than plain PU, but it is not the first choice if the customer is sensitive to latex protein claims or wants a cleaner, less tacky hand feel. Synthetic leather is still the stronger option when the glove must slide less on sharp wire edges and repeated metal contact is expected. In sewn security gloves, we often reinforce the palm patch, the knuckle panel, and the thumb crotch because those are the first failure points. Buyers sometimes overfocus on the back-of-hand appearance, but a neat polyester back with a weak palm seam is a false economy.

Cuff length is a real specification, not a style note

A short wrist glove can be fine for indoor concierge or reception duties, but it is usually too short for perimeter work. For patrol around anti-climb fencing, a 20 to 25 cm knit wrist is the minimum we would consider for a light knit-dip glove. If the task includes reaching into fence gaps, handling sharp edges, or brushing against barbed top sections, a 35 to 40 cm gauntlet or safety cuff gives better forearm protection. A longer cuff also helps keep grit out of the glove, which matters when the guard is opening chain-linked access panels every hour in a dusty yard. The cuff material should follow the job. A rib-knit cuff on a knit glove gives a snug wrist seal and is comfortable for long shifts, but it offers less forearm coverage. A canvas or split leather gauntlet is bulkier, yet it is more credible for perimeter response work where abrasion is the issue rather than just comfort. The actual protection comes from the shell, the reinforcement pattern, and the seam construction.

Touchscreen and radio use need controlled compromises

Many security teams now expect phone use, handheld scanners, or keypad access without removing gloves. The usual request is touchscreen on three fingertips, but that detail should be treated carefully. Conductive yarn only works well if the fingertip area is stable and not too thick. On a 13-gauge liner with a PU or sandy nitrile coating, touchscreen inserts on thumb, index, and middle finger are practical. On thicker synthetic leather or insulated winter gloves, touchscreen performance is much less reliable and should not be oversold. If the glove is going to be used with radio push-to-talk buttons or access-control panels, dexterity matters more than marketing features. A thick foam palm may look tougher, but it can slow fine motor tasks and cause operators to remove the glove repeatedly, which defeats the purpose. Combining both often pushes the spec toward a higher-cost hybrid, where the back remains flexible knit and the palm and thumb web are reinforced with synthetic leather or nitrile overlays. That kind of hybrid glove is manufacturable in Yiwu, but it needs a proper tech pack, not just a photograph.

If the request involves stab resistance, needle resistance, or certified tactical protection, that is a different product class and often a different testing route. A factory that sells knit-dip and sewn gloves should say no when the spec leaves its category. That is not evasive; it is the difference between quoting a usable glove and selling a dangerous assumption.

MOQ, lead time, and the way the price really moves

For a standard knit-dip patrol glove in one colourway, a realistic MOQ is usually 3,000 to 6,000 pairs depending on yarn, coating and packaging. A sewn synthetic leather patrol glove normally asks for a higher MOQ, often 1,000 to 3,000 pairs per colour because cutting and stitching labour are less forgiving than knitting runs. Lead time for a simple repeat order is often 30 to 45 days after sample approval; a new private label development with logo, custom cuff, and colour matching is more like 45 to 60 days, especially if special yarn or packaging is involved. Pricing moves mainly with coating type, shell yarn, reinforcement pieces, and packaging format. A thin 13-gauge polyester PU glove can sit in a very different price band from a reinforced sandy nitrile glove or a sewn synthetic leather gauntlet. Buyers should not ask for a single target price before locking the use case, because the cheapest glove is often the one that gets replaced fastest. If the order is going into retail packs, the carton and insert structure also matter: 12 pairs per polybag, 120 pairs per master carton, or an assorted size run will change packing labour and carton cube. For export, FOB Ningbo or FOB Shanghai is usually cleaner for this category than vague landed pricing, unless the importer has a fixed consolidation route.

What to put in the RFQ so the sample is useful

A usable RFQ for security patrol gloves should name the job, the surface, the season, and the required hand actions. Tell the factory whether the glove will touch painted steel, galvanised mesh, wet gates, car interiors, concrete, or electronic keypads. Then state the shell yarn, gauge, palm type, cuff length, size curve, and whether touchscreen is required. If standards matter, write them in full, such as EN 388:2016+A1:2018, rather than saying high cut resistance or industrial grade. If the buyer expects colour continuity across repeat orders, Pantone references should be given for the back fabric, piping, and logo print, because black on one line of knit gloves is not the same as black on another line of sewn gloves. For approvals, ask for pre-production photos of the palm, thumb crotch, cuff, and label placement, not just one front view. A factory should be willing to show needle count, coating thickness range, stitch density, or seam type if that is what determines performance. That keeps the conversation on measurable details instead of generic comfort language, which is where glove sourcing goes wrong most often.
