The Short Answer For Pallet Repair Buyers
For most pallet repair gloves, we do not begin with a 15 gauge PU palm glove. PU is clean and low lint for dry carton handling, but pallet yards destroy thin coatings with rough deck boards, stringers, blocks, nail heads, splinters, sawdust and repeated lifts of 15 to 25 kg. A practical target is often 4X43B or 4X43C, depending on yarn blend, coating weight and liner tension. Higher cut letters can be made, but they add cost and stiffness before they solve the usual failures: thumb crotch wear, coating abrasion and wet board grip. A proper RFQ should split the yard by task. Sorting and stacking need abrasion resistance, tear strength and grip on damp timber. Repair benches need palm life, tool feel and enough dexterity for nail guns, pry bars and fasteners. Nail pulling, broken staples and hidden wire need a puncture discussion, not only ANSI/ISEA 105 cut level A4 or A5. EN388 puncture uses a standard probe. ASTM F2878 covers hypodermic needle puncture. Neither test makes a flexible glove nail-proof against a rusty pallet nail entering at an angle. For sampling, we normally shortlist five constructions: 13 gauge sandy nitrile cut-resistant knit, latex crinkle coated knit, split cowhide leather palm, reinforced synthetic mechanic glove and puncture-resistant patch glove. We do not make chainmail gloves, IEC 60903 electrical insulating gloves or medical needle-resistant gloves. We also do not print nail-proof on packaging for pallet handling.
Option 1: Sandy Nitrile Cut-Resistant Knit For Mixed Repair Work
This is the most balanced SKU when one glove must cover sorting, light repair, stacking and general pallet yard handling. The normal build is a 13 gauge liner using HPPE with polyester or nylon, plus spandex for fit. Glass fibre can raise the cut score, but it may feel harsh during an 8-hour shift if the yarn is not well wrapped. For wearable pallet repair gloves, ANSI/ISEA 105 A3 to A5 is usually the useful range. On EN388:2016+A1:2018, practical finished gloves commonly target 4X43B or 4X43C. We would rather confirm a stable 4X43B with good abrasion and grip than chase a higher cut letter with a stiff palm that workers remove. Sandy nitrile gives more grip edges than smooth nitrile and usually performs better on damp boards, dusty deck slats and mixed warehouse contamination. It also resists light oil better than natural latex, useful when pallets come from beverage plants, machinery shipments, building material yards or food distribution centres. A 13 gauge liner normally outlasts a 15 gauge liner because the yarn bundle is heavier and stands up better to rubbing on split timber. A 10 gauge liner can be tougher again, but it is often too bulky for nail gun triggers, small fasteners and barcode scanners. Factory execution decides the service life. The thumb crotch is the first area we check, so we can add a nitrile reinforcement patch, a fuller thumb dip or a higher wear patch on the index side. Touchscreen yarn can be knitted into fingertips, but sawdust, resin and wet coating often make it poor value in pallet yards. MOQ for a standard sandy nitrile style is usually 3,000 to 5,000 pairs per colour across M, L, XL and XXL. Lab dip and pre-production samples take about 7 to 12 days when yarn and hand moulds are available. Bulk production is commonly 35 to 50 days after sample approval and deposit. Branding should go on the cuff label, heat transfer back of hand or polybag. Palm printing wears off quickly on timber.
Option 2: Latex Crinkle Coated Knit For Wet Timber And Strong Grip
Latex crinkle gloves still earn their place in wet pallet yards. A common specification is a 10 gauge or 13 gauge polyester, cotton polyester or acrylic terry liner with natural latex crinkle palm coating. Full thumb coverage is worth sampling because workers drag boards across the thumb side during sorting and restacking. Basic versions may test around EN388 2142X or 3142X. Cut-resistant versions using HPPE or glass fibre yarn can test higher, but the main reason to choose this construction is wet timber grip, not fine dexterity. Latex is not right for every pallet operation. Natural latex performs poorly around diesel, grease, hydraulic oil and some chemical residues. It can swell, soften or lose grip faster than nitrile. Latex allergy rules also matter for distributors selling into corporate safety programmes, public-sector buyers or national pallet pools. The smell is stronger than nitrile after dipping and packing. This option suits outdoor pallet sorting, garden centre supply, timber merchants, recycling yards and rainy loading areas where grip is more important than trigger feel. For winter yards or cold stores, a 10 gauge brushed acrylic thermal liner with latex crinkle can be sampled. The trade-off is higher carton volume, slower drying after use and an uncomfortably warm glove in summer. MOQ is usually around 3,000 pairs for stock liner and coating colours. Custom liner colour, cuff colour, private polybag and carton marks often push practical MOQ to 5,000 to 10,000 pairs. Lead time is normally 4 to 7 weeks, depending on dipping line capacity and whether EN388 marking must be supported by a current finished-glove report.
Option 3: Split Leather Palm For Heavy Timber, Blocks And Repair Benches
Split cowhide leather palm gloves are not fashionable, but they still work for heavy repair benches and block handling. A normal build is 1.1 to 1.3 mm split cowhide palm, canvas or denim back, cotton lining and rubberised safety cuff. For rough pallets, we often add a leather knuckle strap, wing thumb, reinforced palm patch or thumb crotch reinforcement. These gloves are bulkier than 13 gauge dipped gloves, but they tolerate abrasion from deck boards, pallet blocks and stringers better than many light coated styles. Buyers should ask for the EN388 report on the finished glove, not only a leather material statement. A rigger-style glove may show good abrasion and tear but only moderate puncture. EN388 puncture resistance is useful for comparing constructions, but it does not guarantee protection from an exposed nail driven through timber at an angle. That limitation should be written into distributor catalogues and safety sheets. Leather also varies by hide batch. Shade, grain marks, scars and thickness cannot be controlled like nitrile coating or synthetic leather rolls. We do not promise identical leather shade across every carton. For private label, MOQ is usually 2,000 to 3,000 pairs per style when using available leather, cuffs and standard cutting dies. A new reinforcement pattern, new die or special cuff construction can add 7 to 10 days to sampling. Bulk lead time is commonly 35 to 55 days. Packing is usually 60 or 72 pairs per carton, not 120 pairs like many dipped gloves, so freight cost per pair is higher. Incoming inspection should check leather thickness by zone, stitch density, weak seams at the thumb, cuff binding and pair matching, not only carton count.
Option 4: Reinforced Mechanic Glove For Nail Gun And Tool Handling
Repair technicians using nail guns, pry bars, saws and pneumatic tools often reject bulky leather palm gloves. A reinforced mechanic glove can be the better compromise. A practical build is synthetic leather palm, spandex or nylon back, neoprene or elastic cuff, hook-and-loop closure and reinforcement patches at the thumb crotch, index finger and palm heel. For pallet repair, real wear patches matter more than decorative silicone lines. Silicone or PVC prints can look strong in a showroom but may peel, crack or polish smooth after repeated board handling. The advantage is tool control. Workers can pick up fasteners, operate triggers and grip pry bars with better feel than in a basic rigger glove. EN388 testing is possible on the finished glove. TPR impact protection can be added on the back of hand, but pallet repair usually needs palm life more than heavy back-of-hand moulding. If TPR is requested, each size may need its own moulded component. That adds mould cost, slows sampling and often moves MOQ to 5,000 pairs or more. This is not the budget route. Cost comes from multiple cutting pieces, sewing steps, reinforced seams, closure parts and 100 percent left-right pair matching before packing. Bulk price depends heavily on synthetic leather grade, patch coverage, cuff closure and whether the buyer wants retail header cards or only 12-pair inner bags. Sampling normally takes 10 to 18 days for a revised pattern and size set. Bulk lead time is usually 45 to 60 days after final artwork, material approval and deposit. Inspection should check seam strength, skipped stitches, hook-and-loop alignment, patch placement, size grading and finger twist. A glove that looks correct flat can still fail when the worker closes a fist around a 90 mm board edge.
Option 5: Puncture-Resistant Patch Glove For Nail Exposure
If workers regularly contact hidden nails, broken staples or sharp wire, the RFQ must say so at the start. Standard cut-resistant gloves are not nail-proof. A glove can reach ANSI/ISEA 105 A4 or A5 cut resistance and still be vulnerable to a sharp nail point if the palm is thin and flexible. For higher puncture exposure, we can develop a layered palm using aramid fabric, dense felt, synthetic leather, nitrile-coated fabric or a specialist puncture-resistant insert in the palm centre, thumb crotch and finger base areas. The trade-off must be approved by the safety manager, not hidden in the sample room. A full-palm insert gives more covered area, but it makes the glove warmer, stiffer and harder to close around thin deck boards. A small patch keeps dexterity but protects only the covered zone. EN388 puncture resistance and ASTM F2878 needle resistance are different tests. Pallet nails are closer to EN388 mechanical puncture, but real work includes rust, nail angle, timber movement and impact force. We describe this product as puncture-resistant in specified zones, not nail-proof. This is a development item, not a cheap catalogue glove. MOQ is normally at least 3,000 pairs per design because insert cutting, lamination and sewing jigs must be controlled. Used gloves should be marked at actual nail contact points, then patch position can be revised before bulk. For inspection, AQL 2.5 for major defects and AQL 4.0 for minor defects is a common starting point. Insert placement also needs in-line checking, because final random inspection may not catch a hidden insert shifted by 10 to 15 mm.
How To Write The RFQ So The Sample Is Not Wrong
A useful RFQ for pallet repair gloves lists the work in plain terms: unloading mixed pallets, sorting broken boards, prying deck boards, pulling nails, operating nail guns, stacking repaired pallets, outdoor rain handling, freezer or winter yard use and container loading. It should state whether EN388:2016+A1:2018 marking is required, whether ANSI/ISEA 105 cut level is needed, whether latex is banned and whether CE documentation is required for EU sale. Without this detail, suppliers may quote anything from a 15 gauge PU glove to a heavy leather rigger, and both can be wrong. Size planning changes cost and delivery. Pallet yards usually consume more L and XL than S, with M and XXL depending on region. Dipped gloves are often packed 12 pairs per polybag and 120 pairs per export carton. Leather and mechanic gloves are commonly 60 or 72 pairs per carton. That changes CBM, pallet height, warehouse receiving and landed cost. Incoterms should be stated clearly, usually FOB Ningbo or Shanghai, or EXW Yiwu if the buyer consolidates with other goods. We do not manufacture metal chainmail gloves, certified electrical gloves or medical puncture gloves. We will not relabel a normal coated glove as nail-proof. For most pallet repair buyers, the cleanest programme is two SKUs: a 13 gauge sandy nitrile cut-resistant glove for general yard work, plus a split leather palm or reinforced mechanic glove for repair benches. It is easier to control, easier to price and more likely to be worn for a full 8-hour shift.
