Sourcing Gloves for Harbour Maintenance and Marina Boat Yard Work Without Over-Ordering Heavy PPE

For harbour and marina work, the right starting point is usually 13 or 15 gauge cut-resistant knit gloves with sandy nitrile or foam nitrile palms, plus separate PVC or chemical gloves for fuel, bilge cleaner and degreaser tasks. Do not over-buy heavy rigging gloves for every job.

Start from the task mix, not the dock label

A harbour or marina buyer usually needs four glove families, not one all-purpose style. The common split is mooring line handling, wet deck and pontoon work, light mechanical maintenance, and chemical clean-up around fuel, degreaser or bilge cleaner. A single glove cannot do all of that well: a thick split-leather rigging glove will fight small shackles and zip ties, while a thin PU assembly glove will fail quickly on wet polyester rope, salt-stiffened lines and rough fenders. The practical starting point is usually 13 gauge or 15 gauge seamless knit for dexterity jobs, then separate heavier sewn or split-leather styles for line handling and lifting. In buying terms, that means one RFQ with task-by-task specs, not one generic harbour glove request. For a standard marina maintenance bundle, we normally separate: pontoon inspection, cleat and bollard work, rope coiling, winch and trailer adjustment, antifouling touch-up prep, and wash-down. Those tasks pull in different materials and coatings. Wet rope and coated surfaces usually favour sandy nitrile or foam nitrile on a polyester or HPPE blend liner. Stainless fittings, cable ties and sharp hose clips usually need an EN 388 cut-rated knit, commonly 2X42C to 4X43D depending on yarn and palm build. If you only ask for marine work gloves, the factory will guess, and that is how you end up paying for cut protection you do not need or buying a grip coating that goes slick when wet.

Use sandy nitrile for wet rope, cleats and deck hardware

For rope handling on a wet pontoon, the best general-purpose build is 13 gauge HPPE or HPPE-polyester blend with sandy nitrile palm coating. Sandy nitrile gives more bite on polypropylene rope, polyester braid, wet painted steel and rubber fenders than flat PU or plain latex. Foam nitrile is softer and often more comfortable for long shifts, but sandy nitrile usually keeps grip better on saltwater-wet surfaces and stainless cleats. A common production spec is 13 gauge HPPE liner, black sandy nitrile palm, knitted wrist, EN 388 in the 4X42C to 4X43D range depending on cut yarn and coating thickness. For buyers who need both feel and durability, a double-dipped nitrile palm can extend wear, but it also adds stiffness and slows finger movement on knots and shackles. This is one area where factory reality matters. Thin coatings are cheaper and more dexterous, but if the dock crew is pulling lines across rough fairleads, the palm will polish off early. Thicker coating improves life, but if you overbuild the glove, crews stop wearing it because they cannot feed rope through a winch or sort small fittings. MOQ is typically 3,000 to 5,000 pairs per colour and size mix for a custom-labelled run, with lead time around 30 to 45 days after sample approval and carton artwork confirmation.

Keep one lighter glove for maintenance, not for line hauling

Small repairs in a marina workshop are a different job from hauling mooring lines. For hose clip changes, trailer light connectors, battery checks, stainless fastener work and general inspection, 15 gauge nylon, polyester or HPPE-nylon blend with PU or micro-foam nitrile palm is often enough. PU is better when the work is dry and delicate, because it stays thin and responsive around screws, plugs and cable ties. Micro-foam nitrile is better when there is light oil, condensation or wet metal, because it keeps more friction than PU once the hands are damp. A sensible spec for this role is 15 gauge nylon liner, grey PU palm for dry maintenance, or 15 gauge nylon with black micro-foam nitrile palm for damp conditions, with EN 388 usually around 3121X, 3131X or similar depending on coating and test result. Do not oversell cut resistance here. If the job is mostly connector work, trim panels, hose routing and inspection, a very high cut rating can be a bad trade because it makes the glove thicker and less precise. The buyer usually notices this only after a week on the dock, when technicians start taking the gloves off to do fine work. That is poor procurement. A better RFQ says which tasks need sharp-edge protection and which do not, then separates those from the dock line-handing glove. If your team wants one SKU for the shop and dock, you can do it, but it will always be a compromise. In practice, a two-SKU programme gives better wear rate and fewer complaints.

Add a separate chemical glove for fuel, degreaser and bilge clean-up

Fuel spill response, bilge cleaner, detergent, solvent wipe-down and antifouling prep are not a knit-glove job. A knitted nitrile palm glove is fine for dry handling, but it is not the right barrier for hydrocarbon splash or aggressive cleaners. For those tasks, buyers usually need a separate chemical-resistant glove in nitrile, PVC or neoprene, depending on the liquid. If the exposure includes diesel, oily water and detergent, PVC or heavy nitrile can be workable. If there is more solvent content, the formulation needs checking against the actual chemical list, not just the word marine. We do not claim every factory-made glove is suitable for fuel or chemical resistance without the relevant test data and the exact product construction. This is where many RFQs become too vague. A marina may say chemical resistant, but that can mean bilge cleaner, engine degreaser, deck wash, antifreeze, or fuel contact. Those are different. If the glove needs true chemical resistance, the buyer should specify the liquid, splash duration, cuff length and whether the hands need dry-out comfort or full barrier protection. If the application is fuel transfer or continuous solvent exposure, the specification should come from the chemical list and the safety team, not from the catalogue.

Mooring and rigging gloves are a different construction

When the job is pulling heavy mooring lines, handling shackles, lifting chain, or working around winches and tow bridles, you are often outside the comfort zone of standard knit gloves. A sewn or split-leather rigging glove with reinforced palm, thumb saddle and knuckle padding is usually more suitable. That matters because buyers often want one factory to quote everything, but not every factory does every construction equally well. If you do want a rigging glove, the spec should be very concrete: split cow leather or goatskin palm, fabric back, keystone thumb or wing thumb, gunn cut or 3D finger pattern, and reinforcement at the index finger and palm heel. For smaller marina crews, a medium-weight split-leather glove is often enough, while commercial harbour users may need a heavier palm patch and longer cuff. These gloves usually prioritise abrasion and rope burn resistance over fine dexterity, so they should not be grouped with maintenance gloves in the same performance target. As a buyer, the useful question is not whether the glove is marine grade, but whether it is for mooring, inspection, wash-down or repair.

Build the RFQ around sizes, colours and pack control

For a custom marina programme, size spread and pack control matter as much as coating choice. A typical run is sizes 7 to 11, with the bulk usually in 8, 9 and 10. If the workforce is mixed and female fit is required, you should ask for a narrower hand shape or a dedicated women-fit size block rather than simply shrinking a men’s glove. For colour, black or dark grey hides dock grime better than white, and a coloured overlock or cuff edge helps supervisors separate the wet-grip glove from the maintenance glove at a glance. Commercially, the usual China reality is straightforward. Custom glove orders often begin at 3,000 pairs per style and colour, with mixed sizes acceptable if the size curve is agreed before production. For container planning, a 20-foot container typically takes roughly 20,000 to 35,000 pairs depending on carton size, glove thickness and pack format, while a 40-foot container is often used when the buyer is consolidating several SKU runs. EXW and FOB are the common factory terms; if you need DDP, freight and duty need to be costed honestly because dockside cartons are often bulky for the value. For approval, ask for a physical pre-production sample and keep the QC standard clear, usually AQL 2.5 for major defects and 4.0 for minor defects unless your brand has a stricter internal rule.

Production Scope and Claim Limits

For many harbour buyers, that covers the real purchasing need without over-complicating the line-up. If the application needs certified chemical permeation data, high-end anti-vibration design, or a heavy maritime rigging glove built to a very specific standard, that must be checked case by case. The cleanest buying outcome is a two- or three-glove system: one wet-grip rope glove, one light maintenance glove, and one separate chemical glove. That approach is cheaper to run, easier to train, and less likely to produce a drawer full of unused stock.
