The Real Cost Breakdown of Custom Logo Gloves: Where the FOB Number Comes From

Roughly half of first-time buyers ask us for a single 'price per pair' number on a quote. Anyone who has run a real OEM brief knows the answer is five numbers stacked on top of each other. Here is the actual cost breakdown of a custom logo gloves FOB quote at our Yiwu glove factory in 2026, with the percentages that move when you change quantity, material or decoration method.

The Five Layers Inside Every FOB Price

Every FOB Ningbo number we quote on custom logo gloves is built from five layers: (1) materials - fabric, yarn, leather, lining, hardware, packaging materials; (2) direct labour - cutting, sewing, finishing, QC; (3) decoration - embroidery, silicone print, debossing, heat transfer, sublimation; (4) overhead allocation - factory rent, utilities, supervisor labour, lab dips, sample iterations; (5) margin. For a typical mid-tier work glove the split is roughly 50% / 22% / 6% / 12% / 10%, but every line moves depending on what you order. A premium leather driving glove can hit 65% material; a hi-volume promotional glove can compress material to 32% and labour to 14%.

Material - 35 to 65% of FOB Cost

Materials are the biggest single cost on most gloves, and the biggest source of price spread across our quotes. Cowhide grain leather runs USD 4.50-7.50 per square foot in 2026 (each glove uses 0.6-1.4 square feet depending on size and cuff length). HPPE 13-gauge yarn for cut resistant gloves bulk costs USD 18-26 per kg; a typical pair uses 25-40g. Nitrile foam coating adds USD 0.18-0.35 per pair. Recycled polyester knit for sustainable-positioning gloves costs 15-25% more than virgin. The single fastest way to move a quote down by 12-18% is dropping from grade-A grain leather to grade-B split, with almost no visible difference at first - but rougher hand-feel and shorter wear life.

Labour - 18 to 35% of FOB Cost

Labour cost per pair on a standard work glove is USD 0.45-0.85 at Yiwu rates (RMB 4,800-6,200 monthly wage, productivity 220-340 pairs per operator per day). Cycling gloves with gel insert lamination and multi-panel construction push labour to USD 1.20-2.40 per pair. Ski mittens with removable liner and 3-layer construction can hit USD 3-4.50 in labour alone. Labour cost has risen about 9% year-on-year in our region since 2022, which is why every Yiwu glove factory you talk to is quietly automating cuff stitching and end-of-line packing.

Decoration - 2 to 15% of FOB Cost

Custom embroidered gloves logo: USD 0.35-1.20 per pair for a 3-8K stitch design, plus a USD 35-60 one-time digitising fee. 3D silicone print on gloves: USD 0.40-0.95 per pair plus USD 80-160 screen setup per colour. Debossed leather glove logo: USD 0.18-0.45 per pair plus USD 80-150 brass die fee. Heat transfer glove logo: USD 0.25-0.60 per pair plus USD 25-50 film setup. On a typical 2,000-pair order, decoration adds 4-8% to total FOB. On a small 300-pair sample run, the same one-time setups can balloon decoration to 12-15% of cost, which is why first orders feel disproportionately expensive.

Packaging - 3 to 14% of FOB Cost

The thing first-time buyers underestimate. Bulk-export packaging (50 pairs per polybag, 10 bags per export carton) costs USD 0.05-0.12 per pair. Hangtagged + polybagged retail-ready packaging adds USD 0.15-0.35. Branded retail box per pair adds USD 0.40-1.10 depending on box quality and quantity. Amazon FBA prep - polybag with FNSKU sticker, master carton labelling - is an extra USD 0.25-0.45 per pair if we do it factory-side rather than at a US prep centre. The retail box alone can cost more than the actual gloves on a thin-margin disposable product, which is why the private-label nitrile boxes you see at Amazon always look better than the gloves inside justify.

Overhead and Margin - The Bit Factories Do Not Itemise

Factory overhead - rent, electricity, sample-room cost, sales-team salary, certification renewal, software, banking - adds 8-15% on top of direct cost depending on factory size and current loading. Our overhead allocation runs at the lower end (about 9%) on a busy month and the higher end (14%) when one workshop is at 60% capacity. Factory margin in this segment runs 8-18% gross on Western buyer accounts and 4-10% on agent / trading-company accounts where we are not the direct counterparty. Anyone quoting under 7% margin is either chasing volume to cover fixed costs or doing the deal wrong.

How Quantity Bends the Per-Pair Number

On the same custom logo gloves spec, going from 500 pairs to 5,000 pairs typically cuts the FOB unit cost 18-28%. The savings come from: (a) one-time setups amortising across more units; (b) bulk yarn / leather pricing tiers kicking in at 200kg / 500 sq ft thresholds; (c) labour productivity smoothing as the line gets used to the pattern after the first 200-300 pieces; (d) packaging supplier tier-pricing. Going from 5,000 to 50,000 saves another 6-12% but the gains taper fast. Above 50,000 pairs annual, gains come from yarn-mill direct sourcing and dedicated pattern-room time rather than volume alone.

FOB vs EXW vs DDP - Where the Cost Sits

FOB Ningbo is our default Incoterm quote and includes everything up to the container being lifted onto your ship. EXW Yiwu strips out the inland trucking (about USD 0.04-0.08 per pair on a typical container) and your forwarder collects from our gate. DDP USA / UK / EU adds ocean freight (varies enormously - USD 0.20-0.95 per pair on a 40' container in 2026), customs duty (USD 0.12-0.60 per pair on gloves at 3-7% HTS tariff), and last-mile to your DC (USD 0.06-0.18). Five Cost Mistakes That Show Up On First Orders

(1) Specifying a fabric mill we do not have an existing relationship with - adds 2-3% sourcing fee and 7-10 days. (2) Ordering at 300 pairs but quoting against a 5,000-pair tear-sheet from a competitor - the price gap is mostly volume, not factory. (3) Free-sample expectations on a bespoke spec - you are paying for samples one way or another, usually inflated into bulk price if 'free'. (4) Refusing pre-shipment inspection to save USD 150 - the AQL audit catches issues that cost thousands at the DC. (5) Comparing FOB quotes from one factory against DDP from another without normalising - the lower number can easily be the more expensive one once freight and duty land.

Why an Honest Cost Breakdown Helps You Negotiate

Most factories will not share a cost breakdown this explicit - it makes margin discussions awkward. We do, because the buyers who understand where the cost actually sits are the ones we want to work with for ten years. Ask any China glove supplier for a line-item breakdown on a serious quote (above 5,000 pairs / USD 15,000). The ones who refuse are usually hiding volume kickbacks or sourcing-agent layers; the ones who provide it are the ones worth running a tech-pack with.
