Split leather driver gloves are sewn work gloves made from split cowhide, not knitted yarn and not a dipped coating. The usual build is a split leather palm and back, a separate thumb panel, and a driver fit that gives better hand control than a bulkier riggers glove. For sourcing, the first spec points are leather thickness, cuff length, lining and thumb pattern. In this category, 0.9 to 1.2 mm split cowhide is a common working range for the main panels, with heavier yard-work styles sometimes moving closer to 1.3 mm if the hide supply and sewing tolerance allow it. An 11 inch glove is the common middle ground for warehouse, pallet and general handling work. A 12 inch cuff is more often used when the buyer wants more wrist cover or a more traditional work glove profile. This construction will not feel like a 13 gauge PU glove. It is less fingertip sensitive, less breathable and usually warmer, especially if the glove has a cotton jersey or brushed tricot lining. Chrome-tanned split cowhide is the normal export choice because it gives a more predictable hand feel and more stable shrinkage in sewing than loosely defined vegetable-tanned material. Buyers sometimes call the surface suede, but in this category that usually means the natural split side, not fashion suede. If the order needs a cleaner face, the factory can often select a tighter fibre structure and trim the nap more evenly, but sewing cannot turn a low-grade split into premium grain leather. One buyer may ask for a 1.0 mm palm with a natural split finish, while another wants a 1.2 mm heavier split for yard work and fork handling. Those are different materials, different yields and different prices. MOQ is tied to leather availability as well as colour. For a plain unlined driver glove, a practical factory MOQ is often around 1,500 to 3,000 pairs per colour or spec. Sample lead time is usually about 10 to 15 days, and bulk production is commonly 30 to 45 days after sample approval. Add lining, embossing, special cuff work or a non-standard hide selection, and the timetable extends. Buyers who want a clean price should keep the spec tight: one leather type, one colour, one cuff, one thumb pattern and one size run.
Stitching, Thread and Failure Points
The stitch spec decides whether the glove survives real use or only looks good on a pre-production sample. Most sewn leather driver gloves use polyester thread because it handles abrasion and damp better than cotton thread. A heavy-duty ticket around 20 is a normal starting point, although the final thread and needle pairing depends on seam count, leather thickness and how consistent the operators are. The failure points are predictable: thumb crotch, index finger root, sidewall flex zone and cuff edge. If those areas are not reinforced or the stitch tension is off, the glove can split early even when the leather itself is acceptable. A stronger build can use double stitching on the high-stress seams, but that adds labour and can reduce hand softness. Branding and Customisation That Work on Leather
Leather gloves give fewer decoration options than knitted or dipped gloves, so the branding plan has to be realistic. Screen print is usually a poor choice on split leather because the fibrous surface absorbs ink unevenly and fine detail breaks up. The practical options are embossing, limited heat stamping, a sewn woven label or a printed hangtag attached during packing. Embossing works best on a thicker palm area or on a wrist strap if the glove includes one. For private label work, a sewn woven label in the cuff or a printed carton spec is usually more reliable than trying to force a detailed logo directly into split leather. Decoration should come after fit is fixed. A poor thumb shape will be noticed before a good label. On a distributor or retail programme, packing details need to be locked before bulk cutting starts, especially if the buyer needs paired hang tagging, size stickers or a fixed master carton count such as 12 or 60 pairs per case. Those details affect packing time, carton size and shipping density.
Production Scope and Claim Limits

A practical example is: split cowhide, 1.0 to 1.2 mm palm, keystone thumb, unlined, double-stitched palm, polyester binding at cuff, woven size label, 1 pair per polybag, 12 pairs per inner carton, 120 pairs per master carton. That level of detail lets the factory calculate labour, material yield and carton volume without repeated clarification. If the buyer wants a lower unit price, the first move is to reduce variables: one colour, one cuff length, one reinforcement layout and one size run. If the buyer wants a more durable glove, it is better to spend on leather selection and seam strength before adding cosmetic extras. In shipping terms, most B2B buyers source this on FOB China or EXW if they already have a forwarder. FOB is usually easier for first-time importers because it separates factory handover from ocean freight, but the buyer still needs to confirm carton dimensions, gross weight and pallet plan before booking. For container planning, the carton count has to be matched to the actual packed pair size and box size, otherwise the freight quote becomes meaningless.
