Custom Batting Gloves: Team and Private-Label Sourcing Guide

Batting gloves are the easiest team-sport glove to private-label well and the easiest to cheap out on badly. Here is how they are built, the grip and palm materials that decide whether they last a season, the sizing range you actually need from youth to adult, and why sublimation has made bold full-colour team designs cheap.

What a Batting Glove Has to Do

A batting glove does three jobs: grip the bat, absorb the sting of contact, and let the hand breathe over a long game. That means a tacky, durable palm; a flexible, ventilated back; and a secure wrist closure. Baseball and softball players wear them in pairs (unlike golf), often replacing them every season or two, which makes them a strong repeat-purchase product for a team or brand. The construction is close to what we already build for cycling and gym gloves - leather or synthetic palm, stretch textile back - so batting gloves are a natural, credible private-label product for us, not a stretch.

Palm Material - Leather, Synthetic and Tack

The palm decides feel and lifespan. Premium gloves use thin sheepskin or goatskin leather for the best grip and feel, USD 2.20-4.20 per pair. Synthetic palms (Clarino-style microfiber) are more durable, washable and consistent, USD 1.60-3.00, and dominate the youth and mid-market. Many gloves add a printed silicone or PVC tack pattern on the palm and fingers for extra bat grip. Leather feels best new; synthetic holds up better over a hard season of dirt and sweat. For a youth or team programme we usually recommend synthetic for durability; for a premium adult line, leather or a leather-palm hybrid.

The Back of the Hand - Where Brands Get Loud

The back is stretch spandex or a knit-and-neoprene panel for flex and ventilation, and it is the canvas teams care about. This is where bold colours, team names and player numbers go. Sublimation printing has transformed this category: full-colour, edge-to-edge custom designs that used to be expensive are now standard and affordable on synthetic backs. A team can have its exact colours, logo and even individual numbers without a big price jump. This is the single biggest selling point for custom batting gloves over generic ones, and it is what lets a small brand or team look like a major one.

Sizing From Youth to Adult

Batting gloves need a wide size range because the market spans little-league kids to adult players. A complete run is Youth S/M/L plus Adult S/M/L/XL - seven sizes - each properly graded. Youth sizes are a large and underserved slice of the market (little league, travel ball), so a brand that grades clean youth patterns wins repeat team orders. We grade the full youth-to-adult run as standard. The wrist length and closure also scale with size; getting the youth fit genuinely right, not just a shrunk adult pattern, is what earns the coach's reorder.

Wrist Closure and Fit

Almost all batting gloves use an adjustable hook-and-loop wrist strap, which both secures the fit and serves as a secondary branding spot. Some premium gloves use a stretch-knit wrist for a sleeker feel. The fit should be snug but not restrictive - batters need full finger mobility. The closure strap, like on a golf glove, is prime always-visible branding and worth a printed or woven logo. We can also add a finger-pull loop and a terry thumb for sweat-wiping, both small details that players notice and that cost almost nothing to include.

Padding and Protection Options

Most batting gloves are unpadded for feel, but there are protective niches worth knowing. Gel or foam padding in the palm heel reduces vibration sting for players who feel it. Some youth and adult gloves add light impact padding on the back of the hand or thumb. These are specifiable upgrades that create a higher-margin 'pro' SKU within a range. For a team programme they are usually optional; for a premium retail line they help justify a higher price point. We build them in when asked but default to unpadded for the cleanest feel.

MOQ, Sublimation Setup and Lead Time

Custom batting gloves start at 300 pairs per design on a stock pattern. Sublimated full-colour designs need a one-time setup but no per-colour fee, which is why bold multi-colour designs cost no more than simple ones - a big advantage over embroidery or screen print. Lead time is a 10-12 day sample then 25-30 days bulk. For team programmes with player numbers, we handle the per-glove variation in the sublimation file; just send the roster. Peak demand is pre-season (Jan-Mar for spring leagues), so teams and brands should lock orders in the off-season to avoid the queue.

The Team and League Channel

Batting gloves sell heavily through teams, leagues and travel-ball organisations, not just retail - and that channel rewards customization. A travel team wants its exact colours and players want their numbers; a league wants a bulk order in its branding. This is a relationship-and-reorder business: get one team's gloves right and the coaches talk. We support it with low MOQs per design, full-colour sublimation, and youth sizing done properly. A brand that services this channel well builds a repeat base that retail-only competitors do not have. See our note on team sports gloves for the broader category.

Packaging for Batting Gloves

Batting gloves retail on a peg in a header bag or, for premium lines, a printed box - sold as a pair, with size and a clear product shot. For team orders, simple polybag-plus-label packaging keeps cost down since the gloves go straight to players. The header card is the branding piece at retail and should show the size range and the design clearly. We print header bags and boxes from 1,000 units. For team channel, a labelled polybag at a few cents per pair is usually all that is needed - spend the budget on the glove, not the bag.

Five Mistakes Batting-Glove Buyers Make

(1) Treating youth sizes as shrunk adult patterns instead of grading them properly. (2) Choosing leather for a hard-use youth programme where synthetic would last longer and cost less. (3) Underusing sublimation - paying for plain gloves when full-colour custom costs the same setup. (4) Ignoring the team/league channel in favour of retail-only, leaving the repeat-order business on the table. (5) Over-packaging team gloves that go straight to players. Batting gloves are one of the most forgiving and repeatable custom sports gloves to source - get the sizing and the sublimation right and the team channel does much of your marketing for you.
