Packaging is 5-14% of FOB cost on a custom logo gloves order and the first thing Amazon FBA and DTC buyers underspecify. Here is what to put on your proforma invoice, the four box quality tiers we run, and the freight-versus-presentation tradeoff that decides which one is right for you.
Why Packaging Matters More Than Buyers Think
On a typical custom logo gloves order, packaging is 5-14% of the FOB number, yet it generates a wildly disproportionate share of the problems we see after shipment. About a third of the post-delivery complaints that reach us are packaging-related, not glove-related: a retail box that arrived crushed, an FNSKU sticker in the wrong place that got the listing suppressed, a polybag too thin to survive ocean humidity. For an Amazon seller, bad packaging is not a cosmetic issue - a missing suffocation warning or a box that does not match your FBA shipping template can get an entire inbound shipment refused. Spend ten minutes specifying this properly on the PI and you remove an entire category of failure.
The Four Tiers of Glove Packaging We Run
We run four packaging tiers and quote them as separate line items so you can see the tradeoff. Tier 1 is bulk export: 50-100 pairs in a polybag, 10 bags per carton, for B2B buyers who repackage downstream - about USD 0.05-0.12 per pair. Tier 2 adds an individual polybag plus a hangtag, retail-ready for a hook or shelf - USD 0.15-0.35. Tier 3 is a printed retail box per pair or per set - USD 0.40-1.10 depending on finish and quantity. Tier 4 is a premium gift box with insert, magnetic closure or soft-touch lamination - USD 1.20-3.50, used for corporate gifting and premium leather lines. Most first orders land on Tier 2; most Amazon listings need Tier 3.
Polybag Specs to Define on the PI
A polybag is not a default - it has specs that matter. State the thickness in mil (we run 1.5 mil for light gloves, 2-2.5 mil for heavier leather pairs). State the material if you are making a sustainability claim: standard PE, recycled rPE, or a GRS-certified film. The suffocation warning text and a vent hole are mandatory for any bag reaching a US or EU consumer. For Amazon, the FNSKU label must be scannable on the outside of the polybag, not inside it, and the bag opening must be sealed or taped per FBA rules. Put all four points - thickness, material, warning, label placement - in writing, because a factory that is not told will default to the cheapest 1.2 mil bag with no warning.
The Hangtag Design Brief
A hangtag is the cheapest piece of branding on the whole glove and the one buyers brief worst. Specify card weight (we recommend 300-400 gsm for a tag that does not curl), die-cut shape, and whether it attaches with a plastic kimble, a cotton string, or a safety-pin loop. Decide what information must legally appear: size, material composition, country of origin, care symbols, and any Amazon-required disclaimers. If you want a barcode or QR on the tag, send it as vector art at final size. We print hangtags 4-colour offset above 2,000 units and digital below that; the per-unit cost is USD 0.04-0.12. The most common miss is forgetting the country-of-origin line, which customs in several markets will hold a shipment over.
Retail Box Construction and Print
A retail box is where presentation and cost collide. The structural choice is FSC paperboard weight and flute (we use 300-400 gsm folding carton for light boxes, E-flute corrugated for heavier sets). The print choice is 4-colour offset (sharp, economical above 3,000 boxes) versus digital (cheaper below 1,000, slightly less crisp). Finishes stack cost: matte or gloss lamination is cheap, soft-touch lamination adds a premium feel for about USD 0.06 per box, and spot-UV or foil stamping each add a brass-die or plate fee of USD 80-180 plus per-unit cost. Minimum order for offset print with a custom die is usually 1,000-2,000 boxes. Send a dieline, not just a flat artwork file - the dieline is what prevents your logo landing on a fold.
Custom Dispenser Boxes for Nitrile and Disposable
Disposable gloves have their own packaging world. The retail unit is a dispenser box - 100-count or 200-count - and the case is a carton of 10 boxes. For private label nitrile gloves headed to Amazon, the box face must carry the count, size, material (nitrile / latex-free), powder-free statement, and any FDA-required text if the gloves are sold as exam-grade. The master carton dimensions need to match an Amazon FBA case-pack template or you pay re-boxing fees at the warehouse. We print dispenser boxes from a MOQ of 50 cartons (50,000 gloves), and the box itself often costs more than the gloves inside it, which is why the cheap-looking gloves in a slick box are slick-box economics, not better gloves. See our companion piece on private label nitrile sourcing.
Master Carton and Export Pack Specs
The export carton is the unglamorous part that decides whether your shipment arrives intact and whether your warehouse staff hate you. We use 5-ply corrugated as standard, sized to stack efficiently in a 40' container and to stay under an ergonomic 15 kg per carton so receiving staff can lift them. Specify carton markings: your SKU, quantity, gross and net weight, made-in-China, and fragile or this-way-up arrows where relevant. For Amazon FBA inbound, the carton needs the FBA shipment label and must respect the 22.7 kg / 63.5 cm limits or it triggers oversize handling. A surprising number of first orders ship in cartons that are technically fine for ocean freight but get flagged the moment they hit a US fulfilment centre.
Sustainable Packaging Options
If your brand makes an eco claim, the packaging has to back it or you risk a greenwashing complaint. The credible options we stock: FSC-certified paperboard for boxes and hangtags, recycled rPE polybags, biodegradable glassine wrap for premium gloves, and GRS-certified film where you need a documented chain of custody. Each carries a premium - recycled polybag is about 20-30% more than virgin PE, FSC board adds 5-10% to box cost, GRS film roughly doubles the bag cost - but the certificate is what lets you put the logo on the pack. Do not claim 'recycled packaging' without holding the supplier certificate; EU buyers in particular are now being asked to substantiate every green claim, and an unbacked one is a liability, not a selling point.
FBA Prep - Do It Factory or US?
Amazon sellers always face this fork: prep at the factory or at a US prep centre. Factory-side prep - polybag, FNSKU sticker, retail box, master carton labelling - costs us about USD 0.45-0.75 per pair all-in and ships ready to forward straight to FBA. A US prep centre charges roughly USD 0.85-1.40 per unit but lets you change labels, re-box, or consolidate after the gloves land. The factory route is cheaper and faster but unforgiving: a wrong FNSKU at the factory means a return trip across the Pacific. We recommend factory prep once your listing and barcodes are stable, and US prep for a first launch where you are still likely to tweak the listing.
The Packaging Sample Approval Workflow
Packaging gets approved in two stages, same as the glove. First we send a digital print proof - a PDF showing artwork on the dieline. You check spelling, barcode, colour callouts and legal text here, because everything is still free to change. Then we run a physical proof: an actual printed box or tag, 5-7 days, so you can see the real colour, the lamination feel, and how the FNSKU scans. Approve the physical proof before bulk, never the PDF alone, because there is always some colour drift between an on-screen proof and an offset press run - usually small, occasionally enough to matter on a brand colour. Budget a week for this loop and do not compress it; a packaging error caught on the proof is free, the same error caught at your DC is not.
Five Packaging Mistakes on First Orders
The five we see most: (1) polybag too thin - 1.2 mil that splits under ocean humidity, when 2 mil was needed. (2) FNSKU in the wrong position or inside the bag, getting the listing suppressed. (3) suffocation warning omitted from a consumer-facing bag. (4) retail box dimensions that do not match the FBA shipping template, triggering re-box fees. (5) master carton over the weight limit, slowing receiving and risking damage. Every one of these is visible on a physical packaging sample and invisible on a quote. None of them is the factory's fault if the PI did not specify - which is exactly why the ten minutes you spend writing the packaging spec is the highest-leverage ten minutes in the whole order.
Need Physical Samples?
For verified B2B buyers we ship 1-2 reference samples free (you cover the courier - ~USD 35 to most countries). Custom mock-ups with your logo run USD 60-120 depending on decoration, refunded against your first PO.
