
ANSI 138 impact gloves and EN ISO 10819 anti-vibration gloves are two of the most-confused specs in PPE sourcing - and two of the most expensive cut-resistant categories. Here is the difference, the test apparatus behind each, what real Level 2 versus Level 3 feels like in your hand, and what to demand from any China glove supplier before bulk.
Impact versus Vibration - They Are Not the Same Spec
The single most common confusion in this category is treating impact and vibration as one thing. They are different physical events with different tests and different glove constructions. Impact is a sudden blow - a wrench slipping, a pipe swinging, a hand caught between two surfaces - and the glove's job is to spread and absorb a single hit, usually with TPR (thermoplastic rubber) armour on the back of the hand. Vibration is continuous resonance - a grinder, a jackhammer, a long shift on power tools - and the glove's job is to damp that ongoing energy in the palm to protect against hand-arm vibration syndrome. A glove built for one is often useless for the other, so the first question is always which problem you are actually solving.
ANSI/ISEA 138 Impact Test - What It Measures
ANSI/ISEA 138 is the US standard that finally gave back-of-hand impact protection a real, measurable rating. The test drops a defined mass onto the knuckle and finger zones of the glove and measures how much force transmits through to a sensor underneath - the lower the transmitted force, the better the protection. Results map to three levels: Level 1, 2 and 3, in ascending order of protection. In everyday terms, Level 1 takes the edge off a knock, Level 2 is serious mechanic and assembly protection, and Level 3 is built for oilfield and heavy industrial work where a real impact is a genuine injury risk. The value of ANSI 138 is that it replaced vague 'impact-resistant' marketing with a number you can specify and verify.
EN 388 Impact-Code P - How It Differs from ANSI
European buyers meet impact protection through EN 388:2016, which added an impact designation - a simple pass or fail marked as 'P' at the end of the EN 388 code. It tells you the glove passed a defined impact threshold, but unlike ANSI 138 it is not graded into levels - it is binary. So an EN 388 glove with a P tells you it meets the bar; it does not tell you by how much. The practical upshot is that EN 388 impact-P comes essentially free with the cut-resistance certification a European work glove already needs, while ANSI 138 gives the granularity (Level 1/2/3) that demanding buyers want. For a glove sold into both markets, we test and mark both, because each customer base reads the spec it knows.
EN ISO 10819 - The Vibration Damping Test
Vibration has its own, much tougher standard: EN ISO 10819. The test rig vibrates across a frequency range (roughly 10 to 1250 Hz) and measures how much of that energy the glove's palm transmits to the hand versus how much it damps. To pass, the glove must reduce vibration in the higher frequencies without amplifying it in the lower ones - a genuinely hard bar that very few gloves actually clear. This is important to understand because 'anti-vibration' is thrown around loosely in marketing; a glove with a bit of gel padding is not an anti-vibration glove unless it has passed EN ISO 10819. The standard exists precisely because gel that feels soft can still fail to damp the frequencies that cause real harm.
TPR Knuckle Construction - How It Is Made
The back-of-hand impact armour on most impact gloves is TPR - thermoplastic rubber - moulded into knuckle and finger guards and bonded onto a knit or leather glove back. The pattern is designed as a CAD layout of the protective zones, then a mould tool is cut to that pattern; tooling runs roughly USD 350-1,200 per design depending on complexity, with a lead time of two to four weeks for the tool. Once the tool exists, per-pair TPR cost is modest. The design work is where protection is won or lost: the armour has to cover the actual impact zones, flex at the joints so the glove is wearable, and stay bonded through real use. A cheap TPR glove with a generic pad that cracks off after a month is the failure mode to avoid.
Materials That Pass Anti-Vibration
Passing EN ISO 10819 is a materials problem, and only a few constructions manage it. Gel inserts in the palm zone are the most common - a viscoelastic gel that absorbs and dissipates vibration energy. Viscoelastic foam works similarly with a different feel. Air-cell constructions trap and damp energy in small chambers. The most capable are laminated combinations - for example an HPPE-and-silicone laminate - that target the specific frequency bands the standard tests. Each adds cost and palm thickness, and there is a real tradeoff: more damping material means less dexterity, so an anti-vibration glove is never going to feel like a thin assembly glove. The buyer has to accept that bulk in the palm is the price of genuine vibration protection.
Sectors That Actually Need These
Impact and vibration gloves are expensive, so it is worth being honest about who needs them. Genuine impact protection matters in oilfield work, automotive assembly, mining, construction demolition, the military, and motorcycle racing - environments where a sudden blow to the hand is a frequent, serious risk. Genuine anti-vibration protection matters for sustained power-tool work - grinding, jackhammering, long shifts on vibrating equipment - where hand-arm vibration syndrome is the documented hazard. We will tell a buyer when they do not need these: cycling, for instance, is not an impact-glove application despite what some marketing suggests - the test, the feel and the failure mode are all wrong for it. Specifying a true impact glove where a padded sports glove would do just adds cost and bulk.
Pricing Reality 2026
The cost ladder, FOB, for 2026. A plain work glove sits at USD 2-4. An ANSI 138 Level 1 impact glove runs USD 3-5. Level 2 is USD 4-7. A true Level 3 impact glove - real oilfield-grade armour - is USD 6-12. A glove that genuinely passes EN ISO 10819 anti-vibration testing runs USD 8-16, because the damping materials and the construction are expensive and the dexterity tradeoff limits how thin you can make it. These are 2-4x the price of a basic work glove, which is exactly why this category attracts oversold product - the margin on claiming a spec you have not actually certified is large. The price gap is real and reflects real materials and testing; a suspiciously cheap 'impact' glove is usually cheap because the protection is not real.
Lab Reports Buyers Should Demand
In this category, demand the full lab report, not a summary line. For impact, ask for the complete ANSI/ISEA 138 test report from a recognised lab - SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek - showing the transmitted-force figures and the assigned level, with a lot-traceable test sample. For vibration, demand the full EN ISO 10819 report, because the pass criteria are nuanced and a summary can hide a marginal result. Ask how long the lab retains the sample and what a re-test costs if you change a material lot (typically USD 280-450). A supplier who can hand over the full report with a traceable sample is one who actually tested; a supplier who only offers a certificate image with no underlying data is one to be careful with.
Two Common Specs You Are Probably Being Oversold
Two oversells dominate this category. The first is cheap TPR-only gloves marketed as 'impact protection' with no ANSI 138 test behind them - most of these would fail even Level 1 in a real lab, but the moulded rubber looks protective on a product photo. The second is gloves with a gel palm pad sold as 'anti-vibration' that have never passed EN ISO 10819 - gel feels reassuring but feeling soft is not the same as damping the harmful frequencies. In both cases the fix is the same: ask for the test report. If the impact glove has no ANSI 138 number and the vibration glove has no EN ISO 10819 pass, you are buying the look of protection, not the protection. How We Build a Custom Impact Glove for an OEM Buyer
For a buyer who needs a genuine certified impact glove, the workflow is six to nine weeks and runs like this. We start from the customer brief and map the hand's actual impact zones for their work. We lay out the TPR protection pattern in CAD against that map, then cut a mould tool to it. We run a sample, get the buyer to wear-test it for fit and flex, then send a lot-traceable sample to a third-party lab for the ANSI 138 (and EN 388-P or EN ISO 10819 where relevant) test. Only once the report confirms the level do we go to bulk. It is slower and more expensive than buying a stock 'impact' glove off a catalogue - but it produces a glove whose rating is real and defensible, which is the entire point of buying protective equipment in the first place.
