Accelerator-Free Work Gloves: What Buyers Can Actually Source from China

Practical sourcing guide for accelerator-free work gloves, including what is realistic in nitrile, PU alternatives, lab checks, MOQ, lead time and claims to avoid on CE PPE files.

The Short Answer for Procurement Teams

If your customer asks for accelerator-free work gloves, do not assume a normal nitrile dipped glove qualifies. Most standard nitrile palm coatings use rubber vulcanisation chemistry that may include thiurams, carbamates, mercaptobenzothiazole or related accelerators. These are not visible in the glove, and a supplier saying skin-friendly is not a specification. For a real purchase order, the claim must be written into the material spec and checked by an ISO 17025 lab against a defined substance list. For Yiwu-style knit and dip production, the practical options are usually three: source a verified accelerator-free nitrile coating from a chemical supplier, switch the palm to PU where the application allows, or avoid the claim and sell the glove as low-lint or breathable instead. We can knit 13 gauge or 15 gauge nylon, polyester, HPPE or nylon-spandex liners and apply nitrile foam, sandy nitrile, smooth nitrile or PU coatings, but we do not manufacture the coating polymer in-house. That chemistry comes from upstream compound suppliers, so traceability starts before the dipping line.

Why Normal Nitrile Coated Gloves Are Not Automatically Safer

Nitrile coated work gloves are popular because they resist oil better than PU and grip better than bare yarn. A common spec is 13 gauge polyester or nylon liner with black sandy nitrile palm, EN 388:2016+A1:2018 performance such as 4121X or 4131X depending on abrasion and tear. That tells you mechanical performance. It does not tell you whether the nitrile compound contains rubber accelerators. Buyers often confuse disposable nitrile examination gloves with coated work gloves. Disposable nitrile gloves are thin film products, often 0.06-0.12 mm at the palm, and accelerator-free versions are established in medical and dental channels. Coated work gloves are built differently: a knitted liner is dipped into a thicker compound, coagulated, oven-cured and washed. The cured coating on a work glove may be 0.3-1.0 mm thick depending on foam or sandy finish. Different process, different recipes, different risks. If the end users already have contact dermatitis complaints, do not solve it by changing only the colour from black to grey. Ask for the specific restricted list: thiuram mix, carbamate mix, mercapto mix and MBT are common starting points. EN ISO 21420:2020 covers glove innocuousness, pH and other general safety requirements, but it does not magically prove absence of every rubber accelerator.

When PU Is the Cleaner Route

For dry assembly, electronics packing, light inspection and carton handling, PU palm coating is often a more realistic accelerator-avoidance route than nitrile. A 13 gauge nylon PU glove or 15 gauge nylon-spandex PU glove can be thin, flexible and low profile, usually with EN 388 abrasion level 3 or 4 depending on yarn and coating weight. PU is not the same as accelerator-free nitrile, so the product page and Declaration of Conformity should not pretend it is. The correct claim is usually PU coated work glove with no intentional rubber accelerator in the coating, subject to test. PU has limits. It loses grip in heavy oil, wears faster on sharp castings than sandy nitrile, and will not replace nitrile for oily automotive stamping, metal fabrication or wet logistics. If your customer needs oil grip and dermatitis reduction at the same time, we normally build a comparison set: one standard sandy nitrile, one low-accelerator nitrile candidate, one PU control glove. Sampling 3 styles in sizes 8, 9 and 10 is cheaper than discovering after a 20,000 pair order that the buyer solved the allergy issue but lost the grip test on the line. MOQ for custom PU coated gloves is usually lower than special nitrile because the coating supply is more standard. For OEM colours and printed back-of-hand logo, a practical starting point is 3,000-5,000 pairs per colour, with 4-6 weeks after sample approval. Special accelerator-free nitrile compound can push MOQ to 10,000 pairs or more and add 2-3 weeks because the compound supplier needs batch planning.

How We Write the Spec So It Can Be Checked

A usable specification is not a sales sentence. It should name the liner, gauge, coating, coating coverage, sizes, standard and chemical claim. Example: 15 gauge nylon-spandex liner, palm coated water-based PU, sizes 7-11, EN 388:2016+A1:2018 target 3121X, EN ISO 21420:2020 compliant, no intentionally added thiurams, carbamates or MBT in coating formulation, third-party screening required before bulk shipment. That gives the factory, lab and buyer the same target. For nitrile, be more careful. Write accelerator-free nitrile only if the compound supplier confirms the formulation and a lab can screen the finished glove. If the supplier can only say latex free, that is not enough. Latex free normally means no natural rubber latex protein. It says nothing about accelerators in synthetic rubber. Also avoid medical-style claims such as hypoallergenic unless you have the legal and clinical support in the selling market. Testing should be done on finished gloves from the pre-production or bulk batch, not only on liquid compound. We normally cut samples from palm coating and cuff area because residues can differ after washing and oven curing. AQL visual inspection can still run at normal levels such as AQL 2.5 for major defects and 4.0 for minor defects, but chemical screening is a separate lab job, not a line inspector decision.

Cost, Lead Time and Sampling Reality

Accelerator-free or low-accelerator sourcing is not a one-week Alibaba exercise. For a standard nitrile dipped glove, counter samples can often be made in 7-10 days if yarn and coating colour are in stock. For special chemistry, expect 2-4 weeks for compound confirmation and lab screening before you even approve bulk. Bulk lead time is normally 5-7 weeks after deposit and artwork approval, longer if the coating supplier has to reserve a non-standard batch. Price movement depends on construction. Switching a 13 gauge polyester sandy nitrile glove to a verified special nitrile may add roughly 8-18 percent at factory level, sometimes more at small quantities because the coating minimum is the problem, not the knitting. Moving to PU may reduce cost or keep it similar, but only if the application does not require oil grip. A basic 13 gauge nylon PU glove is a very different product from a cut resistant HPPE sandy nitrile glove with ANSI A3 or EN 388 cut level C. Packaging also matters. If the claim appears on a header card, polybag or retail carton, your compliance file must support it. A safer B2B pack is usually 12 pairs per inner bag and 120 pairs per export carton with neutral item code until claims are locked. Once printed packaging is produced, changing one phrase can waste 3,000-10,000 cards.

Red Flags Before You Issue the PO

The first red flag is a supplier offering every colour, every coating and accelerator-free status with a 500 pair MOQ. Real dipped glove production has knitting setup, dipping line scheduling, curing temperature control and washing steps. A special chemical claim with no MOQ pressure is usually just a catalogue word. Ask for the compound supplier declaration, finished glove lab report, and the exact production batch link between them. The second red flag is a CE certificate that only shows EN 388 results. EN 388:2016+A1:2018 is mechanical risk testing. It does not prove the glove is free from thiurams or carbamates. You still need EN ISO 21420:2020 documentation for general requirements and a separate chemical screening report if you want to make a chemical absence claim. For the EU, the technical file sits under PPE Regulation EU 2016/425, and the wording on packaging should match what the file can defend.
