Why many 2026 glove quotes only hold for 7 to 15 days, which yarns, coatings, leather and packaging costs move first, and how importers can lock pricing without pushing factories into unsafe shortcuts.
A 30-Day Quote Is No Longer the Default
That assumes polyester yarn, nitrile compound, five-layer export carton board and the USD/RMB rate stay inside the costing band used on the quotation date. For 15-gauge or 18-gauge HPPE cut gloves, cow split leather, goatskin driver gloves, TPR impact gloves and winter gloves with acrylic terry or Thinsulate-type insulation, 7 days is often the honest glove quote validity window in 2026. Our suppliers for yarn, leather, chemicals and paper board do not normally give us 30-day open prices. A useful quote must show the commercial frame, not only a pair price. If your approval route takes 21 days through merchandising, compliance and finance, ask for a re-cost before issuing the PO. A price calculated on 12 February should not be treated as fixed in March if HPPE yarn, RMB or carton board has moved. Separate commodity gloves from engineered gloves. A 10-gauge cotton/polyester crinkle latex glove at 12,000 pairs can be re-costed quickly because yarn and latex are widely available. A 15-gauge HPPE/glass fibre/nitrile glove targeting EN 388:2016+A1:2018 cut level C or ANSI/ISEA 105 A3 needs yarn confirmation before we repeat the same price. If the yarn lot changes, cut result, hand feel, shrinkage after washing and unit cost can all change.
Which Inputs Move First
Yarn usually moves first. Polyester, nylon, HPPE, glass fibre, basalt fibre, spandex and acrylic terry are not interchangeable cost lines. Polyester and nylon have wider supply. HPPE yarn with stable denier and tensile performance comes from fewer qualified mills, especially for 15-gauge and 18-gauge shells. An 18-gauge HPPE/nylon/spandex liner with PU palm cannot be costed like a 13-gauge polyester shell with foam nitrile, even if both look light in a catalogue photo. Coating is the second sensitive item. Natural latex, nitrile, sandy nitrile, PU and PVC plastisol each use different raw material chains and production settings. For foam nitrile, coating weight, foaming ratio, viscosity, dipping speed, oven temperature and washing step affect both cost and rejection rate. Changing an approved sample from flat nitrile to sandy nitrile is not cosmetic. We must recalculate compound consumption, line speed, grip finish and possible EN 388 abrasion, tear or puncture performance. Leather and TPR move differently. Cow split leather depends on hide grade, thickness, chrome-free or chrome-tanned requirement, colour tolerance and cutting yield. Goatskin driver gloves need closer sorting because thin skins can tear at the thumb crotch if the pattern is too tight. TPR impact gloves need moulded back-of-hand parts by size. Packaging is often underestimated. Bulk export packing of 120 pairs per five-layer carton is very different from a retail pair bag with printed header card, EAN barcode label, inner box and shelf-ready carton. One 40HQ may load roughly 80,000 to 120,000 pairs of thin liner gloves, depending on carton dimensions. Bulky winter gloves, gauntlet cuffs or TPR impact gloves may load far less, so freight cost per pair changes even when the factory unit price is unchanged.
How Factories Protect a Price
A factory has only three clean ways to protect a quoted price: buy material early, carry controlled stock, or set a short validity period. For repeat 13-gauge polyester nitrile gloves, holding greige liners or common black yarn can work. For a custom Pantone-matched 18-gauge nylon liner, buying yarn before deposit is risky because that colour may not be usable for another buyer. Our costing follows the approved bill of materials. That means yarn composition, knit gauge, coating type, cuff, size range, logo method, packing, inspection level and delivery term. If the approved sample is 13-gauge nylon/spandex, micro-foam nitrile palm, knit wrist and one-colour heat transfer logo, that exact build is what the quote covers. If the PO later changes to full dip, adds thumb-and-index touchscreen yarn, switches from bulk pack to retail hang bag, or asks for a new EN 388 lab report, price and lead time must be reopened. For OEM and ODM glove orders, material reservation normally starts after a 30 percent deposit against proforma invoice. If payment sits for two weeks, we cannot promise the old yarn or leather price. For larger programmes, staged purchasing is practical: lock HPPE yarn, leather or TPR first, then finalise retail artwork while liners are being knitted or sewing trials are running. There is also a quality limit. We do not protect price by reducing liner weight, changing yarn blend, thinning coating, skipping washing, using weaker carton board or packing short counts. Those shortcuts create claims at incoming inspection under ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 or ISO 2859-1.
What Buyers Should Put in the RFQ
Put glove quote validity beside MOQ and lead time in the RFQ. A workable line is: 12,000 pairs, 13-gauge polyester shell, sandy nitrile palm, EN 388 target 4131X, sizes 8 to 10 in equal ratio, 12 pairs per polybag, 120 pairs per carton, FOB Ningbo, quote valid 10 days. That gives the factory enough information to cost the glove. A message asking for best price nitrile gloves produces only a loose number, and that number changes when the real specification arrives. Ask for separate cost lines when the decision is not final. Bulk carton, retail hanging bag, vending-machine pack and printed inner box should not be buried inside one price if the buyer may switch later. The same applies to decoration. Heat transfer can work on fabric backs, screen print suits simple one or two-colour logos, sewn labels need stitching allowance, and debossing belongs on leather or synthetic leather panels. We do not deboss dipped nitrile palms, and we do not guarantee fine artwork detail on rough sandy coating. State the inspection rule before quotation. Many importers use ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 or ISO 2859-1 with AQL 2.5 for major defects and AQL 4.0 for minor defects. If the order needs pre-shipment inspection, carton drop test, barcode scan, metal detection for food-plant gloves, or lab testing under EN 388, say so at RFQ stage. Inspection time, rework time and lab queues can push shipment by several days, especially in the 6 to 8 weeks before Chinese New Year.
When a Surcharge Is Fair
A fair surcharge is tied to a measurable change. Examples include HPPE yarn increasing before material purchase, USD/RMB moving beyond an agreed exchange-rate band before deposit, carton board supplier revising price, ocean freight changing under CIF terms, or the buyer changing the approved specification. If a 15-gauge cut glove moves from EN 388 cut B to cut D, higher HPPE, glass fibre or steel fibre content may be needed. If the palm changes from PU to sandy nitrile, coating weight, dipping speed and curing settings change. An unfair surcharge is vague. If a supplier asks for extra money after deposit with no change in material, quantity, packing, standard, delivery term or exchange-rate clause, the buyer should challenge it. The same applies when a factory quotes below real cost to win the PO, then reopens price after sample approval. Keep the approved quotation, signed PI, sample code, packing specification, artwork proof and inspection requirement in one file. It prevents arguments about what the quoted price included. There are limits to what a Yiwu glove factory can control. We can control knitting density, dipping recipe, sewing quality, logo placement, packing count and carton marks. We cannot control destination duty changes, port congestion, vessel rollovers, ocean spot rates or test-lab queues for CE documentation under PPE Regulation EU 2016/425. These risks should be assigned through Incoterms and PO terms. FOB Ningbo and DDP UK do not carry the same risk for the factory.
A Practical 2026 Buying Calendar
For repeat work gloves with no new mould and no new lab test, plan 1 week for quote and approval, 1 to 2 weeks for confirmation sample if colour or packing changes, 3 to 5 weeks for bulk production, and then freight time. FOB Ningbo to a main European port can be around 4 to 6 weeks on water, depending on sailing schedule and transhipment. Air freight can save time, but gloves are bulky. Volume weight often makes air cost higher than the glove margin. New custom programmes need more time. A TPR impact glove needs back-of-hand mould review by size, panel placement, sewing trial and flexibility check. A winter glove with acrylic terry liner, waterproof bladder and synthetic leather palm needs fitting adjustment because added layers shorten finger feel and reduce dexterity. A leather driver glove needs hide selection, cutting yield calculation, colour tolerance and seam strength review before bulk cutting. These are not one-week projects if the buyer wants stable quality. For August delivery, do not wait until late June to approve samples. For shipment before Chinese New Year, finalise PO and 30 percent deposit before early December where possible. A realistic buying file contains approved sample code, quote validity date, MOQ tier such as 3,000 or 12,000 pairs, AQL level, carton marks, barcode file, nominated forwarder contact and Incoterm. That is how buyers keep pricing firm without asking the factory to absorb risks it never priced.
